“I loved this appointment. It changed my life in so many ways. I highly, highly recommend his skills and services. He is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet.”
Nine Realms Institute
Change gets easier when you stop trying to change the wrong thing.
I've spent nearly forty years working with people, studying change, trying things, getting some of them right, getting some of them spectacularly wrong, and gradually becoming less impressed by simple answers.
Human beings are complicated. That is not a design flaw. It simply means one explanation, one method or one way of looking at a problem is rarely enough.
Start here if you are not sure
What do you actually want?
Not what you should want. Not what sounds impressive. Not the first answer that appears because you have repeated it for years.
Start with the answer you have now. The free Discovery asks better questions, tests what keeps returning and separates what may genuinely need changing from what is already working and worth protecting.
You do not need to choose a Realm, a course or a theory first.
A place to think differently
You don't need to understand the Institute before you can use it.
Maybe something in your own life needs attention. Maybe you help other people for a living. Maybe you have simply arrived because something made you curious.
All three are good reasons to be here.
Nine Realms Institute brings together the work I've developed around consciousness, identity, emotion, healing, liberation, behaviour, transformation and the stranger edges of human experience.
Some of it sits comfortably alongside established psychology, biology and therapeutic thinking. Some of it is a model I've developed through decades of work. Some reaches into questions where our explanations are still incomplete.
I am interested in all of it, provided we keep enough curiosity to look and enough scepticism to notice when we are kidding ourselves.
What brings you here?
Two different reasons. Two different routes.
Personal work and professional work overlap, but they are not the same responsibility.
For your own life
Personal Change
You may know exactly what needs to change. Or you may simply have the irritating sense that there is more of you available than you are currently living.
Explore the individual Nine Realms Personal Editions, specialist programmes, Healing Audio Sessions, free training and Boundless Personal. Personal Editions begin at £97 and are designed for independent use rather than professional practice.

Practitioner Training
If another person is trusting you with their fear, trauma, identity, healing or future, the responsibility changes.
Explore Sanomentology Practitioner Training or the complete Boundless Practitioner pathway, where all Nine Realms become professionally integrated with practitioner application and support.
Explore Practitioner Training →What people have said
A few words from people I have worked with.
Some came for personal work. Others trained with me professionally. These are a few of the things they said afterwards.
“I cannot believe the value that Martin has packed into this Sanomentology course. One of the best decisions I have made taking this training. Martin is a very gifted trainer and a very original thinker.”
“I was REALLY sceptical. Martin tailors sessions specifically based on your area of focus and makes you feel really comfortable.”
The Nine Realms Council
Sometimes you don't need a course. You need somewhere to bring a question.
A decision. A relationship. A pattern you keep repeating. A direction you cannot quite see. Or something happening in your life that you cannot yet put into a tidy sentence.
The Council is a separate part of Nine Realms Institute: a place for reflection, challenge and perspective through nine distinct ways of seeing, with the option to bring a matter before the Full Council when one view is not enough.
It is not there to funnel you into a training. Bring the question you are actually asking.
The central map
The Nine Realms
The Nine Realms grew from seeing the same problem repeatedly: people were trying to change one thing while the real difficulty was happening somewhere else.
Someone works on confidence when the deeper issue is identity. They analyse an emotion that is actually carrying useful information. They understand a problem completely while their subconscious quietly carries on doing what it was already doing.
So the map became wider.
You do not need to memorise the sequence before entering. The overview page exists if you want to understand how the whole framework fits together.
Start without risk
You can look inside first. Or begin with something completely free.
I would rather you spend time deciding whether the work is useful than spend money trying to discover whether you like it.

Books — Martin Rothery
I also write. Quite a lot, apparently.
Some of the books are nonfiction and sit close to the work of the Institute. Others are novels, where I get to explore many of the same questions by creating impossible situations and making fictional people deal with them.
The fiction is not a side project and the nonfiction is not a catalogue disguised as literature. They are two different ways I think.
Every book has a free preview, so you can meet the writing before deciding whether you want the whole thing.
About Martin
I didn't begin by trying to build an Institute.
I began by trying to understand why I hurt, why people behaved as they did, why change sometimes happened and sometimes stubbornly refused, and why so many explanations seemed to describe only one small piece of the person standing in front of me.
I became client zero. Then practitioner. Then teacher. Then, somewhere along the way, apparently the person who decided nine Realms were required.
That part got slightly out of hand.
The work has grown enormously, but the reason for doing it has stayed surprisingly simple: I want people to have better maps.
Not perfect ones. Better ones. Maps that help us understand ourselves more clearly, help practitioners work more intelligently and leave enough room for the possibility that reality is still more interesting than our current explanations suggest.
Where next?
You don't have to know your next step before you arrive.
If you are not even sure what the real target is yet, start with What Do You Actually Want? If you already know what needs attention, explore Personal Change. If you work professionally with other people, explore Practitioner Training. If you have a question rather than a change target, ask the Council.
Or do absolutely nothing for a moment. Look around. Read something. See how the place feels.
Sometimes finding somewhere that makes you think differently is a perfectly good first step.
